Connecting To Unsecure wireless network?
Posted by postmaster in - Computer Networking Answers on August 5, 2010
Ok, well my mom installed a network adapter thing, and when i try to connect with it on my laptop it doesnt work for some wierd reason, and so I connect to a nearby unsecured wireless network…and I’m scared about it because I have been on the internet and signing onto my email and many other accounts on the internet with my user and password, and I dnt want the person looking at all my information and everything on my computer, and the other day this message popped up for my windows media player while i was connected and it said something like: “p-pc would like to connect and see into you videos on windows media player” and i didnt kno who dat was, and i said dnt accept tho, but its weird, cuz the person prbbly was trying to get into my vids and stuff (i dnt even have like any) i just have music on there. Also I think I know who has this unsecured wireless network cuz when i look out my window sometimes I see this guy just clicking away on his computer always at night, and his house is next to mine, so Im guessing that has to be the “default” named unsecure wireless network im connecting to. Pleaseee help!! Will he connect into my info? Is it dangerous? If i disconnect will he still be able to see my info? Please help!
My Windows Media Player isn’t working AGAIN… Anyone know how to get it back?
Posted by postmaster in - Computer Networking Answers on August 5, 2010
I’m trying to network my computer with our 360, but Media Center just ‘goes away’ constantly on my computer, and I don’t know how to get it back! Can someone point me in the right direction as to how I can recover the program and keep it on my computer?
When I try to open it, I get this:
Fatal Execution Engine Error (0x7927e03e)
When I click OK, I get another error screen that says:
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id = 0x5d0 (1488)
Thread id = 0xb40 (2880)
Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.
When I click CANCEl to debug, I get ANOTHER error screen:
Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debugger with the following command resulted in an error code of 0×2 (2). Please check computer settings.
cordbg.exe !a0x5d0

How can I share media to my Xbox 360 from My Vista PC?
Posted by postmaster in - Computer Networking Answers on August 4, 2010
I am not able to share music, pictures, or video to my xbox 360. I have a Vista PC. My Xbox 360 and My PC are both on the same network. My Vista PC is wireless and my 360 is wired to my Netgear DGN2000 Modem/Router. Both of my devices are connected to the router and internet. I have tried to ping my 360 from my pc and it has not worked. But when I go under the start>network folder, my xbox shows up. I have set up sharing by Windows Media Player and Zune and I have also change my firewall to let the sharing through. Will someone help me fix this problem? I would appreciate it very much. I have also tried Windows Media Center Extender and it too does not work.
How to set up a wireless network…?
Posted by postmaster in - Computer Networking Answers on August 4, 2010
So I wish to set up a wireless network to enable both a PS3 (which I have) and a PVR (which I am about to purchase) to stream media from my laptop.
I am a massive noob in this area so any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is the equipment I have:
Laptop, which has neither internal wireless or Bluetooth capabilities. It does have an Ethernet connection and it also has a connection which has the words “Expansion Port 2″ written near it (if that means anything re what I am trying to achieve.)
Netgear 4 port wireless router connected wirelessly to my laptop through a 54 Mbps wireless pc card (wg511 v2)
Windows XP Home edition.
Ps3 with wireless and Bluetooth capabilities. I already have this connected to the internet through the wireless router. (just not the media server thingy.)
Windows Media Player 11 (apparently this is used in regards the PS3 media sharing)
——————-
I will tell you what I have attempted so far and you can chuckle out loud for a while then see if you can help me out
I clicked on control panel>wireless network setup wizard>ok>set up a new wireless network.
I give the new network a name and leave it checked on “automatically assign a network key”
Now it asks how I want to set up my network.
It recommends using a USB flash drive which I tried first of all and it put some kind of setup program on there. It then said to put the drive in the wireless access point, then the other computer (which I assume can also be the PS3) and then finally back into the host computer.
The first hurdle I came across was the fact that the wireless router I have does not have a USB port!
At this point I am starting to wonder whether I have all of the required equipment (perhaps some sort of networking specific hardware is missing?)
Still that is what you are all for!
I decided to come at this from a different angle so I go back to where it recommends using the USB drive to continue with the network setup.
There is another option which says “set up a network manually.”
When I choose this option it says “Depending on the wireless software running on this computer, the wireless network setup wizard might not work.”
It then would not allow me to go any further.
This confuses me momentarily till I try another option and it makes more sense…
I go to control panel>network connections>new connection wizard
Near the bottom of this next page it has a hyper link to “view wireless networks in range.”
When I click on this it goes to a page which says “choose a wireless connection.”
But in the panel it says “windows cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to configure this wireless connection, use that software. If you want to use windows to configure this wireless connection click “change advanced settings,” click the wireless connections tab then select the check box labeled “use windows to configure my wireless network settings.”
When I do exactly this and then click on “view wireless networks” it comes up with a warning. “You have made changes to the properties of this connection. If you proceed your changes will be lost. Do you wish to proceed?”
At this point I panic that I will lose my current wireless internet connection and instead ask the experts (that’s you.)
Does the fact that my pc connects to the wireless router through some sort of Netgear proprietary software factor in here?
So can I do this thing wirelessly? If not can I do it with cords and if so how would I achieve that?
Thanks so much for your help.
Ok so I have an update:
When I was initially attempting all of the above I was connected to the internet wirelessly through the wireless pc card as I was doing it.
I swapped from the wireless connection to the Ethernet connection and tried the: control panel>wireless network setup wizard>ok>set up a new wireless network thing.
This time I by-passed the recommended USB option for the “set up a network manually.” Option.
Whereas before it gave me this warning, “Depending on the wireless software running on this computer, the wireless network setup wizard might not work.” Now it let me go through and asked me to print out a set of network settings which were to be entered into the host computer/router and the other computer (ie. PS3)
I printed out the settings but am reasonably clueless as to where exactly to enter them.
Is it though the little Netgear icon in the system tray? Where on the PS3? Where on the host computer?
Again I apologize for the noobness but we all have to start somewhere right?
Pete.
Xbox 360 Media Center crap?
Posted by postmaster in - Computer Networking Answers on August 3, 2010
Ok, I’m trying to connect my stupid Media Center to my Xbox 360, and I’m having some really annoying issues. I went to my windows media player, clicked on library and then media sharing. The stupid windows media player that is currently driving me up the wall had a message pop up that says “Your network is a public network. Sharing is disabled to protect your privacy. If you consider this to be a private network, change network settings.” I’ve been messing around with the network and sharing center (i have vista home premium) for like a frickin hour now with no luck and everytime i’ve tried the stupid windows support topics and all they say is that it’s not recommended to do but can be done. Also when i run my media center to add the extension for my xbox, i get up to the part where it says “enter setup key” which is what i get from the media center setup from my 360. I enter it and then it says there’s an error with the configuration. I don’t think it’s the firewall or anything because i only have Windows Firewall turned on and i have the Media Center checked as an exception to let things go through the firewall. If anyone knows how the crap I could get this working and would like to help out, thatd be just lovely. Thanks in advance!

OK, so I got a new laptop and we want to use the old computer for networking files. How?

OK, so I got a new laptop and we want to use the old computer for networking files. How?
My whole family is into music, but the thing is that we have our entire music collection scattered on all of the computers. We’re working on putting them all on the old one (it has an 80 gb hard drive and windows xp, I just needed a laptop), but we want to be able to listen to music that’s on the computer through our home network. It would basically be like sharing a drive, but only part of it. I went to best buy to see what can be done and to get something else nonrelated to this and the guy there said it’s built into windows xp to be able to do that. I looked in the help and support section, but it’s not working on any of our computers. we have file and printer sharing enabled and the songs show up as files in windows explorer, but won’t play in any jukebox programs (Windows Media Player, etc.). Is there something that I’m doing wrong? Thanks in advance for the answers.
Why is my Xbox 360 not detecting my mp3 player?
Posted by postmaster in - Computer Networking Answers on August 3, 2010
I have a sony walkman mp3 player and last night when I plugged it into my usb port I sat and waited for the console to detect it at the my music library screen where it lists your media network, a music cd, and a portable media device. But was never detected although my mp3 player said it was connecting
What am I doing wrong?? Or is there something I’m missing?
Wireless network question dealing with WEP keys?
Posted by postmaster in - Computer Networking Answers on August 2, 2010
I have this setup:
Main rig wired into router.
Laptop, wireless connection to router.
Media player, wireless connection to router.
I have set up MAC filtering, it is not broadcasting SSID, WEP encryption 128 bits.
The questions are, I have 4 keys generated. Should I use a different key for each wireless device? What if I use the same key? Is this reasonably secure?
